BMW FRM3 footwell module repair

Lights or windows stopped working after a flat battery, jump start or battery change? The FRM3 footwell module has usually lost its memory. Post it to us and we rebuild it from its own data, so it goes straight back in with your car's coding.

Symptoms

If your BMW or MINI does any of these, the FRM3 has usually lost its memory.

The FRM3 stores its settings in memory inside its processor. If the voltage drops while the car is starting or being worked on, that memory can be corrupted and the module shuts off the lights and windows.

We back up the memory first, rebuild the corrupted data from the module's own copy and write it back. Your coding and settings are kept, so in most cases it plugs straight back in with nothing else to do.

  • Headlights, side lights, indicators or fog lights stopped working
  • "Lights failure" or lighting warning messages on the dash
  • Electric windows or mirrors stopped working
  • It all started after a flat battery, jump start, battery change or coding session
  • Diagnostic tools can't talk to the footwell module (FRM)
Does it fit?

Check your part number.

We repair the FRM3 footwell module fitted to many BMW and MINI models from around 2007, including the 1 Series (E81, E82, E87, E88), 3 Series (E90, E91, E92, E93), X5 (E70) and X6 (E71), and MINI models of the same era.

The part number on the module label starts 61.35, for example 61.35 9 249 081. Not sure yours is an FRM3? Send us the label details and we'll check before you book.

What you get back

Rebuilt from your module's own data.

Before any work we read and save the module's memory. We then find the corrupted data, rebuild it from the module's own copy, write it back and read it again to confirm.

Your module comes back with a repair report and a 12-month warranty, and we keep the original backup on file.

Removing the module

About 10 minutes in the driver's footwell.

Disconnect the battery first. The FRM sits behind the trim panel in the driver's footwell. Remove the panel, unplug the connectors and unclip the module.

Pack it in a padded box and send it with a tracked service. Keep the battery well charged when you refit it, and use a battery support charger if anyone codes or diagnoses the car.

Questions

BMW module questions.

Will I need my car coded after the repair?

Usually not. We rebuild the module from its own data, so your coding and settings stay in it. If the module has already been reset or repaired elsewhere and the original data is gone, it will need coding after fitting. We'll tell you before going ahead.

Why did my FRM fail?

A voltage drop while the module is busy, typically from a flat battery, jump start, battery change or a long diagnostic session without a charger, corrupts its memory and it switches the lights off.

Which modules do you repair?

FRM3 footwell modules with the 9S12XEQ384 processor, part numbers starting 61.35. Older FRM2 modules aren't covered. Ask us if you're not sure.

Can it happen again?

Yes, if the voltage drops again. Keep the battery healthy and use a support charger when the car is being diagnosed or coded. Our 12-month warranty covers the repair itself.

What if it's not the FRM?

If the module's memory is fine and it isn't the cause, we keep £25 for the testing, refund the rest and send it back with the report.
